My favorite is the Searchers . Its the one where John Wayne and Jeffery Hunter search for Waynes neice (Natallie Wood ) who has been kidnapped by indians. John Wayne and John Ford were both at their peak when they made this film . Monument valley has never looked as good on film and Wayne has never looked so intense. The rest of the cast from Jeffery hunter and Ward Bond were also excellent .
Wayne liked the film himself so much he named 1 of his sons after his character "Ethan" Edwards.
So thats my favorite is it yours if not what is your favorite western ?

I'm right with you. The Searchers is my favorite, with perhaps The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and/or Rio Bravo and/or My Darling Clementine as second runners.

There's so much of The Searchers that stays in the memory, so many fine performances; so many small but true moments--Ethan's sister-in-law lovingly folding his coat as Ward Bond looks away...."Don't ever ask me that!"....the indian bride..."That'll be the day..."..Papa reading the love letter aloud...the nuptial brawl...the rocking chair..."Let's go home, Lucy.."...Ethan framed in the doorway as it shuts him out....Ford's masterpiece, and Wayne's.

Massive Clint fan. So all though I love Good the bad and the ugly, And also the dollars. I think his best is The outlaw Josey Wales. Not one of his most popular but i just love it.
Also Unforgiven is very good for a modern western.

And I like Young guns 1 & 2. Both good films.
Why dont they make many westerns any more.?

I can't remember what it's called but it starred Gregory Peck,Charlton Heston,and Jean Simmonds...ooh...The Big Country...I think...it was about two ranch owners and their long running feud concerning water rights for their cattle....doesn't sound riveting I know,but it's the first Western I ever remember enjoying...I also like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,starring Jimmy Stewart.

no doubt about it - The Treasure of the Sierra Madre from the book by B Traven and directed by John Houston for which his father Walter may have won an oscar as one of the leading players. Humphrey Bogart played the role of Fred C Dobbs.

'For a few dollars more' is my favourite of the 'dollar trilogy' and certainly one of my favourites;
– another is 'The Ox-Bow Incident', a savage indictment of lynching with Henry Fonda and Anthony Quinn, made by William Wellman in 1943;
– and also 'Pursued', a curious, almost noir western made in 1947 by Raoul Walsh with Robert Mitchum and Theresa Wright; the female characters dominate, and the soundtrack is lush European romanticism (quite unlike the usual western score).

All Quiet on the Western Front...it possesses a strong degree of elegance while still portraying a emotional depiction of trench warfare...i nearly cried at the end.
