Is "like um, yah know," is that English? Is this slang to anyone else? After returning to college thirty years later I don't understand the language....Just a few of the jargon!!
Wanna? wicked cool! Where grung? That's fat!
goch ya! what up? got grub? yahl with me? my old man!
meet ya at the crib? eregardless? Guy's refer to girlfriend as, "my Bi..h,". or "my Ho!"

Where is the respect for people and for language? Why are colleges acepting this

Wouldn't it be "What percentage of young people know their English grammar?"

If you're going to complain about respect for language, you need to respect slang as a form of language, as the evolution of language. It's not correct English, but it has its own power and rhythm. Most slang terms eventually get included in the Oxford English dictionary, albeit with the notation of "slang," so even the stewards of language recognize it as having its own value.
And for the record, it's spelled "phat," not "fat."

Not every person is going to speak in proper English at every single point in time. If you expect that, go back to the 1600s. There is no reason to be formal with friends or family, or with anyone we know. An unknown professor should be respected with more formal language, but unless we are writing a formal paper, or are in a business meeting, why should we use complete proper English?

I would say in todays word maybe 5% at best. Reality is that while education spending goes up actual learning goes down. Most kids got a free ride through school which includes myself. School was mostly a big long joke that had to be waded through to get to college.

We do not teach, we do not discipline bad behavior, so why should we expect much from our kids?

I would say the percentage that actually know their English
Grammar is pretty low. 45% maybe a little bit more.
As for the respect for the language, I think that has gone
out the door. I'm not sure why colleges accept it.

Judging from how the kids ask and answer here, it's obvious that only a very slight few have ANY idea of how proper communication should go! It's really sad.

Why do people care who's sayign what in what way? As long as you can understand what their saying, It dosent matter. Why make things so complicated?

It's PHAT not FAT.
It's H0E not HO.

Language is not fixed.

It is a living thing, it changes even when there is grammar written in a book.
