I will be distributing the cover for money which is why I need the copyright.

You don't need a copyright, just permissions.

The record label takes care of all this for you, they are responsible for the royalties.

Or are you independent and distributing on your own CDs? In that case go to Harry Fox Agency (harryfox.com) and see if mechanical rights are available, that is the simplest way. You prepay the royalty, i believe it will be for 1000 cds at at time.

You have 2 other choices. One would be to have the writer grant you permission directly, put the terms in writing. The other is to pay mechanical rights, as set by the Library of Congress Copyright Office. They will provide the needed forms.

there is no reason for you to not do a cover song. there are some details involved but you can handle it!
