In 'A New Hope' Vader senses Luke and then starts a search for him. Vader faces Leia much earlier in the film and he knew nothing. How is that possible? I'm sure I am not the only one who has noticed this, whats the verdict? Or is it another plot hole?

he only sensed luke as his son after luke had been partially trained as a jedi, aslo luke was using the name Skywalker while leia was Organa, so it was pretty easy for him to figure luke out.

Not a plot hole at all. Luke, from the beginning, is tapping into the force with Obi-Wan. He is making waves. He is using and accessing the force. He is growing in power. Leia, on the other hand, does not understand the force, as is clear when she talks to Leia at the Ewok Village in Episode VI. Her strength in the force is mostly dormant, and therefore would not be much of a ripple in the force for Darth Vader to sense. It is like having two people standing behind you. If one is 5 feet away and whispers, and another person yells at you from 10 feet away, you'll hear the person further away. Bad analogy. Good point.

Yes. I'm a dork. But I'm right. :-)

Padme didn't know that she was caring twins when she told Anakin. Vader only knew of one child. I think Vader has run in to other force sensitive beings during the 20 year gap between trilogies. So if he did sense something in Leia, he didn't think anything of it. Just someone else with force potential. Know if she was trained or on the path to being a Jedi, Vader would have killed her. Luke on the other hand has already started his training and was more in touch with the force.

While you can probably read all sorts of logic into it after the fact, it's probably one of those things that was never thought about until after the story went down that route in the sequels.

Thinking about it briefly, right now though... I would probably say that Luke had some kind of deep yearning with regards to his missing father, and that was something that Vader could pick up on.
Leia, on the other hand, having grown up as the (adopted) daughter within the Organa (sp?) family wouldn't have had that same sense of being 'alone in the universe.'

Plus, on further thought, Leia was quite focused with her 'anger' while addressing Lord Vader... she may have been "blocking him" in some small way... and if he wasn't actively trying to push past it, he might not have been bothered to realize.

because leia was not as strong in the force as.... and leia does not know who her father is... so luke knows that he is the son of a powerful jedi so then he has more awareness than leia does so therefore it shows more to darth vader than leia does

the force that Both Anakin and Luke shared was strong enough to tell them both who'se who, but since
Leia didn't know about the force till empire strikes back, she was pretty much secluded form Vaders power.

he sensed Obi Wan not Luke, when the Falcon landed on the Death Star.
Obi Wan and Darth Vader have some unfinished business to attend to

Probably for the same reason Leia didn't get the Force but her twin brother did- blatant sexism.

the force is only with jedi....leia is a girl...jedi are men...hence, lord vader sensed luke's force.

PS>>that's just my theory

Yeah I thought about that too but I have so many other things going on in my mind - I don't need anything else to get me thinking or i'll go crazy.
