Usually computers slow down due to the extra programs we let start when the computer starts. Don't get me wrong, you can have thousands of programs installed, but they shouldn't start "in the background". I've regained almost 50% processing power on some pc's by cleaning up this kind of stuff.

Stop all the extra programs down in the lower right corner (near the clock). Try to have the program not start with Windows. Also run REGEDIT and find the "RUN" area under local machine to delete all programs othere than absolutely necessary. Using MSCONFIG is a good way to test these.

You can stop many "services". Stop the questionable ones ones at a time to see if it's ok. Each one takes resources.

Extra memory? Scan with http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ to see if you can use more.

Hard Drive? Many people are shoocked when a new hard drive is installed. The newer high speed drives can make a vast difference. Try to get a 7200 or 10,000rpm 16mb cache drive. $80 can get you a large fast drive.

Sometimes it's programs like Norton that cause the problem. If you look in TASK Manager, you an sort by CPU utilization to see who's using the processor. You might consider replacing your virusscanner or spyware scanner. Some take a lot less resources.

You might have a "Root Virus". They are hard to find but slow things down a lot. Google a root scanner to see if that's the cause.

A lot of cleanup and fixes can be done with CCLEANER. Cleans up stuff you don't even want to know about!!

Also run http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ to do a seconf virus scan (just in case you's is missing one).

HERE'S A COMMON PROBLEM: Windows indexes everything. Microsoft has recommended for years to turn this off. Right click on your C: drive, and turn off Indexing (skip any messages). This can have a HUGE benefit.

There are several primary areas that could be causing your computer to run slow. The most likely reason is that your registry has become corrupt, you have too many programs running behind the scenes and your system is essentially running in circles with its internal processing.

This question is very vague, so here are generic answers:

1) Buy more RAM
2) Clear your cache
3) Clear all cookies
4) Delete or back-up any movies or videos
5) Defrag your hard drive.

There are others, but these are the main ones. If you can be more specific, so will I.
