I have three very messy kids so I am the queen of laundry! I have tried numerous brands ranging from the very expensive (Tide, Cheer) to the cheapest (Arm & Hammer, Sun, Xtra) and have found the best brand to be All detergent. Smells the best and gets rid of stubborn stains and cost less than $5 for a bottle of the liquid. For an item that has a stain that can't be removed with ordinary washing I treat it and soak it in Oxiclean. All also makes one with fabric softener in it and it makes your clothes soft and smell really good.

They all meet the minimum requirements to clean, but the ones that smell the best or the scented brands. Use the basic detergent and add Downey to the mix and when drying use a smell good smelling static free strip.

Don't worry so much. Use what smells best to you and what you can afford. If they don't come extra clean send them to Good Will. Recycle more often. Clothes go out of fashion so quickly. Be extra careful when eating and drinking and if cooking wear an apron. Look for sales.
