John Lennon wrote it. As to its effect in a literary sense, I'm not entirely sure.

I'm with Solarius on this one. I know John Lennon wrote it but don't know what effect it had...and I used to know what the word Spaniard was in reference to but have forgotten. It was so long ago and I wasn't entirely....alert(?) back then!
