I'd be surprised if you do find any sites for free as I've never been able to either. Those people need to put food on their tables as well. They'll give you a small amount of info to start, but then you have to pay for them to dig deeper.

Sorry, buddy. Nothing's free, not even a free sample of soap. My husband tried his geneology, and once he got back 2 generations, they wanted $99.99! Maybe the library is your best bet. Call the library first, ask for reference, and ask if they'd be able to help you more than the internet for free. Good luck!

There is a lot of free information accessible on the web. Most of the websites offer some information for free, and then have more extensive information available with a subscription membership.
Check rootsweb.com
genealogy.com
familysearch.org
ellisisland.org

and try looking for local websites for the county you live in (or where your ancestors lived), and for local historical societies that may have posted genealogical information on their websites. There is a lot out there. Keep looking.

http://www.familysearch.org/ is free and is run by the LDS Church. Other sites are usually money making and have to be supported by either ads or charges.

Keeping all those records of family history is probably expensive. This makes me mad too.
