Because it created a widespread sensation that something in the current system is deeply wrong. Socialists thought that the system needs to be changed in order for it to survive. Communists thought that the system needs to be dismantled altogether and replaced with a different one...

Prior to the depression things were going to good, people were working and creating wealth. When the depression set in people were desperate, and many felt that socialism and Communism was an answer to there problems, the USSR had formed and was progressing and was trying to export communism as a great revolution just as the American Revolution and effected France.
What would have happen had the Russian revolution failed?
Would people had turned to Communism and socialism?
With the idea's of Lenin and Marx flotting around and hard times the depression forwarded there ideas.
Communism and socialism start out easy, for they are not governments that can easily create wealth, but are good at taken the existing wealth and dividing it up, where the state gets the lions share. Communism and socialism are not able to respond well to new ideas, or exploit new ideas or develop new forms of wealth. Without expansion Communism and socialism will fail.

The Great Depression like many economic downturns bring out more discontent from the disenfranchised that they desire to jump at any political philosophy that would provide them relief and grant them prosperity. If you look at the Presidential elections from 1876 to the beginning of WWII ,when the country was in an economic panic, recession, or depression the socialists and communists would pick up the marginal, discontent economic masses who was over eager to change. So when the Great Depression arrived and the Presidential election of 1932 brought out a greater support for the socialists and communists. People are always looking for a quick fix but the Great depression would only be solved in adrawn out program of the NEW Deal.

because socialism shares the wealth of a country equally amongst everyone, so in a time where you cant bearly afford to feed yourself and your family whilst there are people in the same country driving half a dozen cars the idea of having there wealth shared amongst your family and friends is hardly unappealing.
Socialism/communism is an extreme political view, in a time where there was not a very serious problem (like depression) extremest party's were not attractive, there promised to completely change something that may be working. Obviously the opposite of this is in a time of chaos like depression where the present government is clearly failing a extreme, new idea becomes extremely attractive.

FDR was a communist and shoved those types of politics to the forefront of the nations minds, like brainwashing.
If this is for school, start by googling 'FDR communist', you will get about a million or so hits but in the first four pages I think you will find what you are looking for.

Because they support more social programs to help the poor. A depression creates more poverty. People like to support the party that they believe will help them (by feeding them and all instead of ignoring them).
