That is a complicated subject, well addressed in the source. Basically, go simple but not low quality or cheap. A good first step is binoculars.

Ask yourself these questions.

How much money do you have?
You will need to pay at least $300 for a good telescope.

What do you want to do with your telescope?
Do you just want to do live viewing or do you want to do astrophotography? If you want to do astrophotography you will need something that can track.

What do you want to view with your telescope?
Some telescopes are ideal for planetary viewing, such as long focal length apochromatic refractors, while some are ideal for deep space viewing, such as large dobsonians. Others are very versitile, such as 8" Schmidt Cassegrains.

Is space an issue?
If you don't have much room then you deffinatly don't want a 16" Meade LX200 on a giant field tripod, or a 20" JMI Dobsonian.

Is light pollution a problem, and if so, are you willing to transport the telescope?

What else do you want the telescope to do?
Some telescopes come with goto systems, and will automatically find objects after an initial calibration, and some have navigation systems that will tell you where to move the telescope to find the object. Some even have GPS. These features are costly, however, and are useless on small telescopes.

A lot of people are happy with 8" Schmidt Cassegrains, and there are a lot of them on the market.
