I hearby confirm that The Who's Keith Moon and John Entwhistle coined the name by saying that they would go over "like a lead zeppelin."

After some discussion, "Led Zeppelin" was chosen as a new name. There is some confusion around how this name was chosen. A popular version which has become almost legendary, comes from Keith Moon and John Entwistle, drummer and bassist respectively from The Who, suggesting that a possible supergroup containing themselves, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck would go down like a lead zeppelin, a term John Entwistle used to describe a bad gig.[11] The group deliberately dropped the 'a' in Lead at the suggestion of their manager, Peter Grant, to prevent "thick Americans"[7] from pronouncing it as "leed".[

They were originally Lead Zeppelin, as The Who said "their act will float like a lead balloon." But the band changed it to Led zeppelin so people don't call them L-E-A-D zeppelin.

When the band switched their name from the Yardbirds, John Entwistle (from The Who) predicted that the new group would "go down like a lead zeppelin" (his own term for a bomb, like a 'brick balloon'). The 'a' in lead was dropped so people wouldn't pronounce it 'leed'.

NOTE to "Handsome Devil" : you (or your buddy) is full of crap. Led Zep opened their US debut at the Whiskey a GoGo in LA. And when they did play Hampton, months later, it was to a sold out crowd.
"The businessman in Dineen couldn't resist the lucrative allure of rock 'n roll. The Doors, Janis Joplin, the Who and Chicago played to sold-out Casino Ballroom crowds, who paid ten times more admission than the check-dancers had. In the 1960's and 1970's, the rock music scene exploded, and marvels such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Led Zeppelin blew the minds of thousands at the Casino Ballroom."

Well according to my uncle who saw them play live at Shepton Mallett back in the day & was like deaf for a week! It comes from a quote by The Who's drummer Keith Moon when he found out who were the members of the new band ie Led Zep.He said they'd never make it & would go down like a lead balloon.

Supposedly Keith Moon and John Entwhistle talked about forming supergroup with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, and John said that would go over like a lead zeppelin, his term for a bad gig.

"going down like a lead zeppelin"
My buddy opened for Led Zeppelin in what he believes to be their first or one of their first US shows. There was like 15 people who came to see them. Nobody had heard of them. It was at Hampton Beach Casino in NH. He said the first time he heard Dazed and Confused was live in front of him. He also said they were smoking cigarettes on stage, which wasn't allowed at the time and quite an "in your face" statement for the era.

Hi, I think it was caused by someone telling the band "you'll go down like a lead baloon" when they first started up, in other words, thought they'd be crap
