Ammonia is certainly one major cause of this and a big water change and cleaning the filter will stop that. Otherwise it may be a bacterial infection which would best be treated with Maracyn 2, tetracycline or Furanace. Salt is a good cure for quite a few ailments, but not a bacterial infection and wouldn't help with ammonia problems either. A small amount (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons) added to the tank won't hurt, but isn't a cure either.

You did not say if it's in a tank or bowl. That is what happens with major stress, if you have it in a bowl dip 1/2 of the water out and add fresh back in. Also add 1 tablespoon of table salt that is Non Iodized to the water before you poor it it. Make sure the label says no Iodine, that will kill fish. If it's in a tank do a water change and change your filter pads. Also cut back on feeding you may be over feeding and that will effect the water quality. Good luck

Sounds like you have an ammonia problem in your tank. You'll need to do a series of partial water changes and treat the new water before each change.
