I think they could. Republicans are not as concerned with what race or religion their leaders are as Dems would like you to think. Democrats have never nominated a Jewish person for president either. I think either party could if they had a strong candidate. It is important to note, that overall Jewish people tend to be Democrats like Catholics so it is more likely the Dems would nominate a Jewish person.

No. Look at all the nominees of the GOP. The Democratic Party and the Republican have nominated Christian, white men because the majority of the country is Christian. However, the GOP turns out WASPS while the Democrats have given Catholics (Smith, Kennedy, and Kerry) the nomination breaking with the long standing unspoken tradition. The GOP has never nominated a Catholic or Italian, they just don't do it. I don't think a Jewish person can ever win a GOP nomination and it will be difficult for that same person to try and get the Democratic nominee.
