It's a simple issue of practicality, and the decline of vanity.
Your take on the issue is quite insulting and ignorant, actually.

The way I see it is that as women get a older they don't want the hassle of long hair. Young women enjoy having longer hair (a lot of the time) and playing with styles and colors. it's fun, but as you get older and the texture changes or it thins long hair can be a pain in the way it tangles, the fact that it takes much longer to dry, and styling gets tricky.
It is generally a personal choice of it being easier and less stressful to deal with. I don't think that in most womens cases it has much at all to deal with how feminine they feel.

As one grows older and no longer feels the need to attract a mate, hair length becomes less of a beauty issue and more of a convenience or comfort issue. Some older women with long hair also opt to tack it up in a bun or some other sort of "shortening" style, too...

I'm 48 and my hair is down to the middle of my back. I've never dyed it and never will. I hate getting my hair cut, since I can't get a breath without chemicals going up my nose and getting into my eyes. I also don't care if I have gray hair or look old, since I like how I look and like my age. Women aren't encouraged to feel good about their bodies or aging...and it's a lot easier to dye short hair than masses of long hair.

One reason that old women cut their is that as they get older it becomes more and more difficult to deal with all that hair (brushing, washing, rollings, putting it up, etc.) Many of the older women in the assisted living where I work have arthritis and they just can't get their hands and arms up over their heads in order to style long hair. Short hair is just plain easier for them.

Persinally, I like long hair on women. And, I think most men do to.
When women get older as one said, they do not want the hassel of messing with long hair.
Most older women seem to wear the same hair due all the time. They go get it permed and fixed. Then get rise in the morning, brush it out, spray it, and their off.
seniors'.. answer explains it pretty well to.

We are taught...like so many other things...that long hair is for young girls. But there are other reasons. Firstly, to have the air of authority or professionalism, a shorter haircut looks better. In addition, as you age, your hair gets less healthy and shiny and bouncy...sometimes better to keep it shorter to maintain its healthy appearance. Bangs and hair around your face can make you look younger. And also, long hair tends to draw your face down...so a shorter cut can liven it back up.
Its all personal opinion.

Not all women cut their hair as they get older.
A lot of women experience thinning hair (just like men) as they get older. Also, as people age their rate of hair growth slows. This combination of thinner hair and slow growth means shorter hair.
One more thing, long hair takes a lot of care (time and attention).

Most women's hair thins as they get older. My mother (age 45), cut her beautiful long blonde spiral curls a few years ago because of this.

Generally speaking, long gray hair is unattractive. It looks like a pitiful attempt to maintain youth. Both of my grandmothers have short hair, and they look great.
