do i need a "dial-up" modem to fax document directly from my computer?

Yes u will need a dialup modem if u donot have a Fax capable printer connected to the computer.....

as far as i know, u need a dial up modem. Actually it is a fax/voice modem that you can use with microsoft fax. I believe that there are many web based fax programmes where you can pay a small fee. I think there maybe one where you can fax via your own email. Look it up

Well Yes of course.
You need a Fax modem (not modems can do it). & to work with that you need a Faxing software like "fax machine" Its really easy to use.
Or
you need to have a webased faxing service. Im sure there are planty of them as well.

Most computers and laptops already have a "fax/modem" built in. If you don't, consire one of the web-based services.

You could buy a card. Or you could buy one of the multifunction fax/copier/printers that then allow faxing directly from the pc as well. $50 up.

Yes, unless you use a web based faxing service such as eFax, InterFAX, etc. There are many companies, do a Google search to find them.
