Tonya, I do believe that people should be hired on the basis of qualifications, but it isn't always the case.

I think the hiring process should be more screened, but not by race or demographics (which is a huge problem in my city). My cousin found out a couple of years ago that the janitor working at her son's school was a pedophile.

Thor, I agree

Shadow, there is a credible reason for why I am asking this question. I have taken no offense in your answer. I bring up this subject to make a point, not to further racism. In about another day or two I will explain my motives.

Zell, you are a weird one... lol! As a woman, I take offense.

Da Ben, not my point at all. I'm not looking for diversity in the work place. But I liked your answer nonetheless. I, myself am for cultural diversity, what would the world be like without it? One big boring sphere...

I'd hire whoever was the best person for the job. I've done so before and will continue to do so. I'm British and no private UK business is covered by actual affirmative action laws anyway (the exceptions being public sector - police force, for example).

By 'best for the job', I would go on a mixture of qualifications, experience, personality in the interview and my perception of their aspirations and work ethic.

Truth be told, after the extensive interbreeding between every group on the planet for so many years, I don't feel race is even a credible way to differentiate between people.

My main reason would be that I want to be successful, and the best people will help me do that, but the fact that I have no personal racial prejudice helps.

I've worked a lot of place where people were hired just because of thier color or nationallity. Mexicans, because they work cheap. Blacks, so there is no cause for affirmitive action, though, they won't work them side by side. Japaneese because it was a Jappaneese owned company. Jews...well I never really caught on with that but it was because they were Jew. I tries to get a job at a Chineese resturant once and they litterally laughed at me. I don't agree with it but this is what I've seen for years and it's the way it is. If I had my own business I would interview over the phone so I wouldn't know anyway until they came in to work what color or nationallity they were. But here is one other thing. I have had to do buiseness over the phone at times and could not clearly understand the representitive because they spoke poor English. Some even spoke English but it was all jivey like they were from the Bronks. And I wonder, how did this person get this job without being able to communicate with the customers? Other than that, race, gender, nationallity should not matter. Although, I am a believer that the job should go to an American first, assuming you're talking about a buisness in America. That's how I see it. I personally don't have good people skills, therefore, I would not qualify to work with the public but my color or what ever should have nothing to do with me getting the job. A job should go to the best candidate with a good background and skills, nothing else.

Personally I feel that the term "minority" is degradeing in itself. I would hire the person who is best suited for the job reguardless of the position.. I do not, nor ever had judged a person on their race, religion or creed. People should all be equal (as we are all created) reguardless of the skin they wear. I think it is a sad day in sociaty when questions like these need to pop up (please dont take this the wrong way, I am not calling you or your quesion silly in any way... in fact I find this to be a very serious issue). I can only hope that I live long enough to be able to see the day when people are not judged by the life they were born into, rather who they are as an indevidual and what they have to offer our community.

I would hire the best man or woman for the job period. Now suppose my offered job is a customer service position, I'm not going to hire anyone of any color who does not speak well and have a neat and clean appearence. Gold teeth, earrings, sagging clothes, see ya. Send me a qualified worker that meets the above criteria and they have a job. Most qualified gets the job. That is one of the bright spots of capitalism (or how it should be) is that the sleekest and best get the rewards. But the fact is that big brother is gonna "make" me hire a minority regardless of who else might be better qualified then I am gonna buck up every chance I get.

If the purpose of the business is to be "successful" on a monetary basis, a individuals qualification is needed not the "race" they belong to. If you are hiring by race then your chances of being monetarily successful is very low and it will end up becoming a social club. So, the answer to your question is I would hire an individual by their qualifications.

Hire base on qualifications not race.

Me personally, I want someone to higher me because I have the education level, and I know how to do my job, I don't won't to be hired because I'm black. To many people depend on Affirmative action. I hire people all the time, and believe me it's not because of their skin, I'm running a business not a charity case, I want someone who can bring my business up, not because I have to fit a quota, and That's why I think my business is thriving

I really hate the concept of affirmative action, if were hired on that basis I would feel inferior as I would know that I did not get the job because of my gifts or talents but merely to fill some arbitrary quota system.

Of course I would..I love cultural diversity..that's part of the reason I learned to speak mandarin..There are no "Affirmative Action Laws" here...I assume you mean fairness in hiring or something....race makes no difference at all to me...ability to do the job means everything.

i always wanted to have a restaurant of my own -
let's see:
the chef: creative, talented, and has passion for the job and i would let him choose his assistents
waiters: as much of a variety as possible, hopefully some that can speak at least one more language apart from english (good for attracting tourists)
host/hostess: someone kind, responsible, loyal and with a bit of attitude, someone who doesn't take b*llsh*t from anyone - not even me.

color or ethnicity is completely irrelevant - for as long as i have good and decent people working there ...

i would never go for a single race or ethnic group - i find it dull

and that was the most honest answer i could give

i am generally very annoyed at all racial prejudice one can find esp in this group of yahoo answers

I would hire the person who is the most qualified candidate, and is most likely to do the job well.
If a person was a bad fit for a job, because their appearance and demeanor which reflect their ethnic/social background would drive away potential customers, I wouldn't hire them.
I don't think that this is fair, but sometimes it makes good business sense.
