Every character actually stands for something, & that is how it can identify 1 particular vehicle.
The 1st character denotes the country that it was assembled in.
the 2nd & 3rd tell what manufacturer
etc.

They give information such as where the vehicle was made- production plant, series, etc., brake type, gross weight, body type, model year, engine, and the number just for that vehicle of course.
All the manufactures do it a little different so it just depends what information is actually there. But those are the common things.
