I think you should keep it to yourself unless she specifically asks you to help her get help.
Or if she starts to get so depressed you're actually worried about her safety, then would be a good time to tell. Like if she is hurting herself (cutting etc) or if she's been talking about suicide.
If she is truly depressed, I'm sure her family and other people around her have noticed it.
The best thing you can do for her is just try to be a good friend, try to be there for her, and help her understand that there are bad times and good, but things will get better.

Well you just did.....admit that your depressed too. I think this would be the perfect time to get her some help, as well as saying you know the signs and symptoms because your there too. Maybe you and your friend could get some counseling and or other type of help together. If the depression seems serious, and any scary thoughts have begun (i.e., suicide, hurting yourself, or others etc.) then move quickly, because having a depressed friend do something like this would be bad enough, but knowing and not saying anything about it would definitely be unbearable. I wish you BOTH lots of luck.

It's a tough call at best but real friends can discuss these things with each other. The fact that you can admitt you suffer from depression is excellent. That alone gives you experience so that you can recognize it in your friend. You obviously care about her so see if she's open to discussion. You can let her know it might help you as well. You're both there to support each other emotionally. That's what friends are for.

How old is she? If she is not an adult, then tell her folks or a teacher instead. They will be better able to handle the situation than you will. If she is an adult, then the adult thing is to forget how YOU will feel and talk to her. She needs help, and the longer you wait the harder and more dangerous the situation could be. Good luck!

depression is a tricky thing, but if you feel she is in danger you should tell her that you are going to couseling yourself because you don't feel very well yourself and ask her if she is interested in getting some emotional support too. Its just a good way to deal with depression and its important that we all care enough to tell a friend. Its hard but you don't want them to get hurt. Think about it, take care Heather
