You can not "monitor" a Windows XP machine using Remote Desktop because, if you connect to the Windows XP machine using Remote Desktop, the user (your child) will be disconnected from their session thereby giving a visual indicator.

This is due to Windows XP's limitation on the number of simultaneous Remote Desktop connections.

You can logon on the desktop using Remote Desktop when your child is not connected to the machine but your child may have already cleared internet browsing history.

A better solution for monitoring the activity of the child is to use software such as NetNanny and others like it. This allows you to discreetly and remotely see what sites the child is visting and what is being typed on the keyboard.
