having lived in japan, i think that manga is more popular because of the type of transportation available in the society. most people travel by train / bus / bike and it is far easier to bring along manga entertainment with you on your commute than a tv to show anime. however the technology is available where many japanese have these shows available on ipods, their cell phones, etc.

Being part Japanese, I agree that reading is better. It's because of,like jenin said, the transportation available. Many people like to go on subways so while they wait for their destination, they can read. In the manga, the manga-ka can usually speak to their readers and include special things that the anime doesn't include. The people in Japan also seem to like reading it more. Most people in Japan usually don't stay home doing nothing or slouch around as much as America does. They pretty much like to do things and get up (that's why most are thin). The way the manga is written is also better and not to mention, the art is better. When you don't know what the characters really sound like or look like, it's kind of like you get to make it up. You can also bring the book anywhere instead of having to wait for the episodes to come out. It just is like that.
AND THEY ARE NOT SLOPPY OR CONFUSING!

If you're used to the format of how manga is read then you will probably enjoy it as well because the manga is more detailed and well thought out comparing to anime fillers and sometimes really redundant scenes. Manga is not mainly reading the text and the dialogue but the art is actually better than those of the ones in the anime. The only thing that manga lacks is color like you said but it is obvious that manga has better and more concise storyline and detailed artwork. However, it just depends on the person whether they prefer the story than the colored animation. Both have their pros and cons.

Because most manga aren't consist of action scenes, they consist more of drama.
And also you can read manga almost anywhere, while for an animation you need a screen along with the appropriate aparatus, a power source for the screen, and a storage medium / transmiting source.

Well one reason may be is that of course the unsensored like you said and also might be because they dont have to wait long for another vol. to come out cause it doesnt have to be translated and also they probably get really into the books that by the time an anime is made of it they might not like the anime cause it is somewat different from the manga that they originally liked
