What is 20% of $5000?
First you change the percent into a decimal.
20% ---> .20
Than you multiply that decimal by the amount provided.
5000 x .20 = 1000
So the answer would be $1000.
Another Example:
Lisa purchased a coat that originally cost $17.99. She used a coupon for 10% off. Sales tax for the coat was 6%. How much did she pay after using the coupon and paying sales tax?
First find the cost of the coat with 10% off.
Hint: (First you change the percent into a decimal.)
10% ---> .10
You travel backwards 2 spaces, 10.00% take the decimal and move it to .10
Hint: (Than you multiply that decimal by the amount provided.)
17.99 x .10 = 1.799 ---> Round it to 1.80
Now subtract that amount from the original price.
17.99 - 1.80 = 16.19
$16.19 is the price of the coat with the 10% discount. Now we have to total it with sales tax.
Change the sales tax into a percent.
6% ---> 6.0% Move 2 spaces backwards.
0.06 is your decimal / percent.
16.19 x 0.06 = 0.9714 rounded to 0.97 cent
Now add that price, because it's tax.
16.19 + 0.97 = 17.16
Lisa payed $17.16 for the total price of the coat using the coupon.

percent (%) means per 100 or out of 100
in this case then, you need to calculate 20 out of 100 from $5000
the following:
(5000 divided by 100) 5000/100 = 50
(multiply this by 20) 50 x 20 = 1000
therefore, the answer is $1000.
Alternatively, you may convert 20% as a fraction, which is 1/5 (one fifth) and simply divide 5000 by 5 then mulitply by one because when you have find a fraction of a number, you divide by the bottom then multiply by the top number.

You can either set it up in fractional or ratio form or just multiply 5000 x 20%
5000 x 20%= 5000 x .20 or 5000 x 1/5 or
5000/x=100/20
100x=100000
x=1000

20% means 20 out of 100
this is 20/100 which cancels to 1/5 ie 20% is 1/5
You want 20% of $5000
So 1/5 of $5000
To find 1/5 of anything divide by 5
So 1/5 of $5000 is $5000 divided by 5 which is $1000

find the amount when the base and percent are known
amount = base x percent
convert 20% to decimal
remove the % symbol. divide 20 by 100
20 / 100 = 0.2
Multiply 5000 times the decimal
5000 x 0.2 = 1000
The amount is $ 1000
$ 1000 is 20 % of $ 5000

20% OF 5000
means
20% TIMES 5000
(OF = times)
Percent means "divided by 100"
so, 20% is the same as
20 divided by 100
So, you have
(20 divided by 100) times 5000
Putting that in a calculator.... = 1000

ok, shall we are saying she paid 'x' for the workstation. She bought the workstation for a income of 25%. or, x + 25% of x = 60 or, x + (25/a hundred)* x = 60 or, x + (a million/4) * x = 60 or, x (a million + a million/4) = 60 or, x (5/4) = 60 or, x = 60 * 4 / 5 subsequently, x = 40 8 So, Chrissie paid £40 8 for the workstation! :)

take any number say 7,279.05 and you want 11 % of that figure
divide 7,279.05 by 100 that will give you 1% of it.
You will get 72.7905
Just multiply 72.7905 by 11 to get you answer
800.6955

6% of 250
250 divided by 100 = 2.5
2.5 X 6 = 15
15 is 6% of 250
all else fails a $3.00 calculator will do fine. Now tell me how would you mark-up 765 by 15% & what is 15% of 765?
