I hope typos are caused by people typing too fast and trying to save an answer immediately to get to be the first answer submitted, in the rush to get best answer nobody wants to wait for spell check to tell them if they pushed a key incorrectly. Other typos are probably caused by the vast amount of Internet shorthand used everyone online these days.
But I do see a fair share of words spelled completely wrong, that stand a snowball's chance in hell of being a typo...our culture most likely doesn't care about spelling anymore. As you said, everything has a spell check, if it's important the system will figure it out. As for yahoo answers, if you get the point across if you spell something wrong along the way, the worst you get is someone you don't even know thinking that you can't spell.

Although, I am a good speller, I always use the spell check in case of typo's. However, there are occasions that when I click on "Check Spelling" that it does not work, it will have the little spelling icon that goes around and won't stop. However, I can not stand when people spell something that is totally off the wall, it makes their questions or answers look ignorant.

Just look at it as a challenge when you read something here that's full of spelling errors. Imagine you are decoding a secret language. This can be very fun for intelligent people like yourself.... although being obsessed about spelling doesn't prove high IQ... there are a lot of brilliant people out there, who are not good in spelling, but are very smart in areas you have no clue about. Don't sweat it.

The education system isn't failing them. They are refusing to participate. They think one day they will magically wake up and have a free check to live on. It's not the education system. It's the value of hard work that is lost. It's the value of having personal responsibility for yourself and your family that is lost. It's the ambition of becoming something better than what you are that is lost.

I assume it's because most of the people in this forum are college age or younger, and are too hip to "learn" or "study" or "care that they look stupid".

It's no so much that they spell their words wrong ....it's just "cool" to spell your words like a "online gangster wanna be" - I dunno.
I guess intelligence doesn't get you laid as quickly.
