It seems that all we hear about are the detahs caused by insurgents, so I assume they are responsible for the majority of the civilian deaths....

I think the number is a little high too. Per the wiki the 2006 population of Iraq is 26,783,383. Using that number and the mortality rate in Iraq, I came up with 143827 deaths in 2006 or 394 per day. Keep in mind that is ALL deaths. Many of these would have occurred through natural causes such as old age.
To put that in perspective, consider that the mortality rate in Iraq is 5.37 deaths/1,000 population (2006 est.). In the USA, the rate is 8.26 deaths/1,000 population (2006 est.). Based on that alone you might conclude you'd be safer in Iraq than here.
Still it is a good question. But the answer seems to be 'no one knows'.
Still, I hear many stories that indicate the military is trying extremely hard to keep civilian casualties down. Remember the Hiditha incident where our military killed some civilians? Those guys are facing criminal charges right now. Since the media wants to rebort every abuse by the military they can find, and they have only found 2 incidents in 4 years (Hiditha and Abu Ghraib), that would suggest that there aren't too many other incidents. Or they would have been reported.
Out of frustration with the news, I actually wrote the military a couple of months ago and submitted a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request to find out how many enemy combatants our military has actually killed.
So far, the only response I've gotten was anecdotal from one military aid. He told me 'when our soldiers rocket a building, they have difficulty determining how many people were inside'. That sounds kind of lame to me, but it's all i've gotten so far.
It seems as either a) no one is doing a good job recording the information or b) no one is willing to share.

No way 500 iraqi's a day are dying. Sorry to tell you, but that figure is propaganda. It's more like 30-50. So 40,000-50,000, not half a million. Still a lot, but let's stick to facts.

It doesn't matter how many Iraqis have been killed by the US military, since we invaded a sovereign country pre-emptively the US is responsible for every civilian death since our invasion started.

First, prove that 600K were killed since 2003. You liberals are so easily brainwashed into anti American propaganda.
EDIT: PROVE that the 600K # is accurate. The UN says around 55K and most of those were blown up by ISLAMIC SUICIDE BOMBERS! you threw this nonsense # out ....so prove it or STFU! and yes you are a liberal or something like one.

A lot less than our media makes out. They don't always give us the correct facts. We mostly see the bad and ugly not the good. That is what gets the most attention. Sad.....but true.
