upstream or downstream?

A mustang is faster out of the gate. If it has a 302 or an older one with a 289, they leave Camaros sitting at the light. But the top end, the end of the run, if you will, a lot of times the Camaro will take the finish because the camaro usually has a 350 in it which is a big block while a mustang has a small block v-8. It does matter who is driving it, whether or not it is an automatic and the size of the motor. Now, if the Camaro has a small block 327? The Mustang will probably not win that race. I am talking about stock here, not souped up or modified. But hey, I am just a dumb woman....lol!

Let's ask John Force? LOL!

undeniable and straightforward the 00 -02 mustangs ought to easily sit down and spin using a lite rear and in no way some thing controling it. as far as engine it wasn't even a 302 it extremely is a 5.0 liter it turned right into a 4.6. camarow on the different hand had a device set up to maintain away from spinning and launch the vehicle correct alongside with more advantageous weight in the erear for traction. that they had a 5.7 liter engine a 350. the camaro can make short artwork of the rustang. even the cobras ought to have problems with camaros. yet now the question is mustang and gto or corvette gm once agai rips ford plus has a higher resale fee

Fast Camaros

this has been a long debated question, but according to testing done by a lot of the car mags, the camaro is faster. I think mustangs are too light in the rear. As for the 305 350 argument, they are BOTH small blocks

A mustang gt vs a z28 camaro, the camaro is faster unless the person driving has no clue what they are doing. As far as the slp vs the cobra their times are usaully about the same even with the cobra having more horse. Now put some exhaust and some good tires on the cobra and it would run alot better times.

Depends on which year and model.

Overall, there's one factory-fresh Mustang that's out in front.

2000 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R, a race-inspired, 2-seater Mustang with a modified body, suspension, huge rear wing, full rollcage, and 385 horsepower/385 pounds per square foot of torque.

The top camaro was the 2002 Chevrolet Camaro SLP, which had 330 horsepower, 45 less than the Mustang.

If you factor in modified Camaros and Mustangs, there are a few more, but I was unable to find all of the specs.

Callaway C8 - Modified version of the 1992-1997 Camaro with a wider body, more aerodynamic styling, and a sportier suspension. Horsepower N/A.

Shelby GT500 - Based off of newest Mustang, comes with Shelby badging, engine, and body. 500 horsepower.

Saleen SR - Based off of 1993-1998 Mustang with a racecar body kit and custom paint. Horsepower N/A.

Saleen S281 - Based off of 1998-2004 Mustang, modified engine, suspension, and body. 325 Horsepower for standard model, 435 horsepower for SC model, and 550 horsepower for Extreme model.

Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Yenko also modified Camaros and Shelby did modified Mustangs. I couldn't find much data on these, so I can't truly say which is faster, but I do remember an old Motor Trend article which compared the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z06 and Shelby GT500 KR, and the performance was comparable. I believe that's above and beyond any of the Camaros of the time.

I hope this has answered your question. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

Assuming stock vs. stock.

Camaro is faster, on a "same year vs. same year" basis. Even the Cobras couldn't beat the Camaro SS until about 2003 (could have been 2004, I can't recall).

If you are just posing a general question, in the era of "run what you brung," anyone can beat anyone. Depends on who is modded better.

PS - Terrorsquad77 - the 2002 SS had 325 hp and the SLPs had 345-350. No production Camaro exceeded 350 hp. Hell, the Vette only had 350 hp in 2002, so why would Chevy make a Camaro that can outrun the Vette?

In general with similar configurations the camaro is almost always faster stock for stock. Ford sells way more mustangs than chevy does camaros, but the camaro was almost always the faster of the 2 in a sporty v8 equiped model. Some notable exceptions would be the Cobra R and the 03 SVT Cobra which was factory supercharged. Chevys have always been more popular to "hot rod" so its cheaper/easier often to make them faster than stock too.

the camaro is always a faster stock car, the mustang always had to use a supercharger just to get some power, in my eyes a super charger put in a car from the factory or not keeps it from being considered stock, go with the camaro its a chevy! like a rock

the camaro has always been faster car for car, (and the 2002 SS had 385, and the slp had 425)

i own a 2000 ss intercepter, an 88 iroc, a 92 5.0 and an 05 gt mustang...... and camaros are all around faster. mustang gt500's and cobra R's dont really count, as intercepters and callaways dont count....but an intercepter will outrun a cobra.
