I've had my apple snail Escargo (his name) for about 4 mos. now.

Escargo has grown about half an inch in size and I've been trying to find some better resources on the net/amazon for more information about the history/lifestyle of these guys.

My tank is 2gallons right now and I'm considering the possibility of getting a larger tank for him soon if he grows larger.

Any advice/tips for extra care?

I love this little guy, and I want to see him do exceptionally well.

In short:

What is the history of the apple snail?
How large can/do they get?
Any apple snail books that you would recommend?
Any general advice/tips on care?
When should I consider getting a larger tank?

- As always your responses are appreciated!

There are 2 freshwater species that come in a gold color. Pomacea Bridgesii is the most common and is 2" across full grown. The other type is Pomacea Canaliculata and gets twice that size. The easiest way for you to tell what kind it is - put in a fresh leaf of lettuce - a Cana snail will eat it immediately while the other kind will wait for it to get soft.
Whichever type it is a bigger tank will make him and you very happy - snails are wonderful animals! I have a lot of free care information on my website. Feel free to look around.

It's been my experience that apple snails are pretty much indestructible. Mine started out in my tank the size of a pea, and now is the size of a ping pong ball, and loves raw veggies and algae wafers.

http://www.fishfriend.com/ This site has a lot of good info on almost any fish or aquarium denizen you might want to look up.

The article on the first page on how to get rid of snails will give you a lot of things not to do in your tank. LOL...

Good luck.

I haven't kept them in years and years, but here's a site with some good basic care info:

http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/Bug,%20Snails,%20Apple.htm

He will eventually out grow your 2 gallon and would be happy in a 10 once grown. Ohter than that perhaps someone with some experience with them will give you the rest.
