I would prefer a Washburn of the two. It also depends on what kind of guitar you want (electric or acoustic).

For an electric, you can get a decent used Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster for a less than 300. Of course, you'll have to factor in the amplifier as well.

But for acoustic, you have a lot more choices. Some Washburns are decent, but I would suggest a beginner-intermediate level Fender, Ovation, Takamine, or lower end Taylor.

Takamine actually makes a guitar called the Jasmine for a very decent price. If there's a Guitar Center near you, I would definately ask about it. Or go to musiciansfriend.com. They have a decent selection of guitars.

Hope this helps!

Are you playing electric or acoustic?

If electric, Fender Telecasters are popular.
If acoustic,Martins are good.
Both of these guitars new will be over your budget, but if check pawn shops or classified ads you may find a good buy.

When shopping ,make sure to take a friend with you that knows guitars(if you can).
