I just installed a new external hard drive onto my computer. The computer recognizes it in the device manager. There are also no errors as it claims it is working properly. All of the drivers are updated and installed as well. It is an external hard drive enclosure with a Samsung 300gb hard drive inside. The computer knows it connected to the usb but wont show it on the removable device in explorer. It also does not allow to me save anything but it knows its connected. Is there anyway for me to make it reconize it as plug n play. It is an metal gear box by galaxy i bought it on newegg.com

Goto your control panel -> administrator tools->computer management->disk management.
Does it show up in the drive list there.
If so, it may need to be formatted or the drive letter changed. You do all that from here.
Hope this helps.

Might be the port you are plugging this into cannot handle the power requirements to run the drive, so it can't spin up the drive.

usb can be 'powered' (up to 500ma) or 'unpowered' (you need to power the unit externally). You can see this under Device Manager, USB, Properties, Power tab

If you have different usb ports, try those. Or try using a "powered hub" to see if that works.

Could be that the HDD is USB 2.0 but your system only has a USB 1.0 controller.
Not all USB 2.0 devices can run slower when plugged into USB 1.0 ports.
I had this recently on an old system when I tried to use a USB 2.0 pen drive.
