People think if they keep a beta alive for 3 months, they have done a good work. This simply is not so. Betas will easily live in captivity for 2 to 3 years if properly cared for.

The fish are almost strictly carnivorous and require a high meat diet of brine shrimp, bloodworms, and specifically formulated protein enriched beta food. Due to their history, betas prefer slow moving water with very little vibration in the water. Their lateral line is very sensitive to water movement and it is best to keep their aquarium away from sources of vibrations such as booming stereos, fans, and television sets.

Betas can live for one day to 5 plus years, it just depends on if they are getting the proper care. The best way to care for a betta is to keep them in small fish bowl, nothing more than 1 gallon because their usual habitat is in small creeks or rivers in Japan. I would only recommend using bottled water with no flouride because the flouride can kill the fish and you wouldn't have to deal with any of the chemicals/water treatments. Their bowl should be cleaned out every 5-7 days. You'ill want to take the betta out of the bowl and keep him in a cup with a little bit of old water from the bowl so he doesn't get stressed out so much. Strain the gravel from the water and give it a quick rinse in cold water. If you use warm water you'll be killing all the good bacteria in the gravel that the fish need. Give the bowl a quick rinse with cold water and scrub off any algae on the sides. Refill the bowl with bottled none flouride water only, put the gravel back in and what plastic plants or statues that you have. Then just dump the cup holding the betta and the water into the bowl and you should be all set. If your also wondering what they eat they are carnivores so you can go to your local pet shop and get little beta bites for them. if you have heard about people putting live plants on the top of the bowl and the fish will eat the roots that's wrong.

Usually they live about three years, but by the time you buy the fish it's probably about a year old. So you get about 2 good years with your fish if you take good care of it.

Bettas kept in poor conditions may live a year or so. Bettas kept in ideal conditions and fed well can live as long as 7 years. However 3-5 years in the average lifespan.

Well cared for a betta will easily live between 4-5 years. Quite a few last beyond that and even as long as 7+ years. Poor care will shorten their life span significantly.
