Yes, but it must be BABY LOTION. Johnson's or Baby Magic are best.

PLEASE--- none of the commercial ones that contain mineral oil or petroleum jelly etc. SO bad!! I cannot imagine why they are still on the market. Anything put on anyone's skin will absorb into the body--- so you want only natural things that are good for the baby.
Newborn's skins often peel within the first week of being born. They often get 'baby acne' as well, due to hormones. You can just leave it alone, or if you feel better, rub some good quality almond or olive oil or a chemical free baby lotion purchased from a natural foods store. Even if it costs more, it lasts a really long time and is SO much better than the regular kinds.
Diaper rashes are prevented by frequent diaper changes (of course!) and also leaving the baby's little bottom exposed to air and sunlight. Place pads under the baby and let him kick his feet--- a nice massage is excellent at this time too. There are books on baby massage, although for most of us it comes pretty naturally!
Lucky you! Have a wonderful time with your precious baby!

The biggest thing about baby lotion is that as you apply the lotion you are also messaging the baby not that you are purposely doing so, it is just naturally done by anyone that applies lotion and yes baby lotion is very safe it is made with none allergens just for your baby. If you are concerned you can make sure by using a scent free but it should not be a problem.

Well, as for me and my family, we don't use just anything. We only use products that are from the health food store.

There are terrible things that are in baby lotion. You should read the labels of everything that you own sometime. I can bet that once you did some research on the ingredients, you would probably stop using them all together. Never mind putting them on a new born baby. Honestly.

Did you know that Johnsons and Johnsons baby lotion has PROPYLENE GLYCOL in it. Sorry to say but that is the same ingredient used in antifreeze and other off the wall garage type items! I dont know about you but that scares the hell out of me!

In fact, PG penetrates the skin so quickly that the EPA warns factory workers to avoid skin contact, to prevent brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. PG is present in many stick deodorants, often in heavier concentration than in most industrial applications. (Nyack, Dr. Vin, Ph.D., Biochemist; personal communication). And Propylene Glycol is what is used to carry the “active” ingredients in those transdermal patches INTO YOUR BODY
Imagine a bottle of Anti-Freeze in a picture with shampoos, deodorants, cosmetics, lotions and toothpastes?
The question you should be asking is …. What’s Anti-Freeze doing IN my shampoos, deodorants, cosmetics, lotions and toothpaste?
Yes, the main ingredient in anti-freeze is in all of these products.

Yes that is why they call it baby lotion it's usually tolerated beautifully by all babies. If you are worried about possible allergic reactions just use a small amount on a tiny area and wait 24 hours. I would think you run very little danger by giving baby a lovely rub of lotion.

pretty much yes.
i would make sure it's something mild like baby magic or J&J baby lotion (ya know, in the pink bottle).
i would stick to the unscented ones at first to be sure they don't irritate baby's skin.

it's hard at first, but it gets alot easier!
my little guy is 6 months now and i feel like just the other day i was worrying about the same stuff!!!

congrats on the little one and take care:)

EDIT:
don't worry about that nut job who answered above me....propylene glycol is deemed safe to use in many products that we eat and use as cosmetics. sure, it's found in antifreeze and other items, too, but it's not the MAIN ingredient that makes that product harmful to ingest.

propylene glycol is metabolized into alctic acid, which is the same stuff that your body produces when you exercise....it's not toxic at all. you and your baby will be fine using regular old baby lotion.

also, i didn't mention...i personally, like J&J's aveeno baby lotion. my son has a bit of eczema on his face and tummy and this helps clear all that up!
over time you will figure out what works for you and your baby.

also, if you ever have issues with diaper rash here are my top remedies:
-cornstarch
-boudreaux's butt paste
-my ALLSTAR favorite (like when it gets REALLY bad) is "triple paste" it's a bit pricey, but it works. get it at CVS, target, walmart. www.triplepaste.com

take care.

Babies don't need lotion... their skin is perfect how it is. I don't even use soap on my son (thats what dries out the skin!) I just wash him in warm water every night. He's never needed lotion.

Organic oil would be better than lotion.. olive oil, or coconut oil are good choices.

probably. If it is Baby Lotion, it is made hypo allergenic and should be safe for a newborn. My daughter never had any kind of reaction to it and we used Baby Magic from birth.
