Close to a grand? What, Walmart selling engines now? You're looking at somewhere around $3000 big ones and maybe more depending on the engine you put in! Pace Pontiac runs a GM distribution center. Check there website online and you can get the engine cost, then add 16-20 hours of labor at $55 an hour! Some shops are $70 an hour these days! You won't get a junk yard engine installed for any where near $1000!!

depending on where you have the work done, if the motor is brand new, or used, if they dont fall into any other problems when replacing the motor, it could run you anywhere from $1000-1800. and my opinion is that if you have over 130 thousand miles on that '92 you might as well buy a new vehicle because that wont be your only problem. your transimission could go, catalitic convertor, axle problems if theres rust or such, etc. many diff things could go wrong.
so there is my opinion and gl 2u.

Probably more than it's worth....If you can get a reliable/known good (which you cant verify) used engine with low miles, your looking at $1-2k installed. If you buy a long block (autozone replacement with most parts installed) and do it yourself (2-4k), you can rely on it, but you will have to rely on someone to install it. You should be able to find a comparable car for less... Mind you, these are WITH the engine cost and most hoses and such that will be damaged taking them off.

Too much for that car. It's around $800 labor and unless you pay $2500 for a factory remanufactured motor, you don't know what you're getting.

my brother just replaced his engine in his 93 civic. its not the same car, but the engine was over half what the car was worth. if the motor is more than the car is worth, buy a newer car.
