Use the formula, log base a of b = c, where in your equation c=4, b=81, a=3. The answer would be log base 3 of 81 = 4. To translate that to calculator, to check your work, use the formula (log b)/(log a) = c. Using your numbers, that would be (log 81)/(log 3) = 4.

Log (base x) of Y is defined as the exponent that the base x is raised to equal Y.
So log[base 3] (81) = 4
but your calculator will not have a log with the base of three. To fix this take the common log of the number in question and divide it by the common log of the base required.
For example log(81)/log(3) = 4.
Try it on your calculator. the answer you should get is 4.
I hope this helps

if 5^3 = one hundred twenty five, then log(base 5)one hundred twenty five = 3 the backside of the log is an identical via fact the backside of the exponential, and the exponent turns into the fee of the log the log type skill that 3 is the exponent to which 5 must be rasied to get one hundred twenty five
