They can if you pay, but I held my son from San Diego CA. to Jackson MS. My arms were sore but I saved some money :)

A baby can lap ride for free up till the age of 2. Technically the are to be in your lap, but if there are seats available then its fine. At the age of 3 you have to get the a ticket of there own. If you want the baby to definitely have a seat of there own get them a ticket.

Only if you purchase one. Otherwise they sit on your lap.

I've done both. The extra seat is nice, but the extra $300 is nicer. It's a pain to manage a baby on your lap, only spring for the extra ticket if the flight is extremely long.

If the child is over 2 yes. The reason is you have to purchase a ticket for he or she after the age of 2. Therefore if you have to pay for a ticket you have an assigned seat for them. (I travel a lot and have a 4 yr old)

On all the airlines I have traveled on, 2 years and up have to have their own seat. Younger than that you can buy them a seat or they can sit in your lap. The best way to find out would be to call the airlines or check out their website.

Some airlines will make you pay for another seat for your baby, some will let you lap the baby. I know Southwest, depending on how busy the flight is, will let you lap you baby or use another seat for the lil one.

Most airlines require that you purchase a seat for the infant and then strap in their car seat. They don't allow them to fly for free or sitting in your lap.

If you don't pay for a seat, then they do not. However if the flight is not full, then they can have an empty seat.
