you will need to do heat loss, gain calucation to determine this and take into consideration where you live .... but you will find out this will normally equal to 750 sq ft per ton ....a ton is 12000 btu....if your home has alot of windows and glass doors especially facing the southwest then you can reduce this to 700 sq ft per ton....at 1000 sq ft you should only need a 1 1/2 ton unit but i would personally get a two ton unit....

You really need an inspection. The size of the dwelling is only one part of sizing the heating/AC unit. Windows and doors also are included in a good estimate of sizing these units. You get and lose heat through these that can be a major factor.

Because you location more or less dictates how big of a unit you will need, the best thing to do is to get bids from local contractors and compare their proposals.

in the journey that your changing an A/C inspect the unit records plate on the A/C or on the compressor of your previous one. they are rated in tonnage. you are able to bypass a a million/2 ton the two way, yet for ideal effects use an identical score. sturdy success

Depending on the climate you live in, you would probvably want at least a 3-3.5 ton AC unit.
