the earth is not in the air. the gravitational pull of the earth pulls the air towards it. since the air is less dense that the soil of the earth it remains above the ground. now the earth remains in space in it's orbit because of the gravitionaly pull of the sun.

The earth rests on the back of a giant turtle. That turtle, then, stands on the back of another turtle, which is standing on a third turtle, etc. You ask what the bottom most turtle stands on? There isn't one; it's turtles all the way down.

just as the moon is falling around the earth, the earth is falling around the sun. it is kept in orbit by centrifugal force of its velocity. this is the general theory of gravity.
