Ghandi was a human rights pioneer - who first cahmpioned for minority rights in South Africa - and later helped acheive independence for India.

The term 'mahatma' is actually a title - it means 'great soul' in Hindi..Ghandi's full name was: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

His greatest legacy would have to be non-violent resistance - as he preached change through peace as opposed to violence (although he was ultimately a victim of violence many times - and ultimately assassinated)

he is considered to be the father of the nation by the indians,he is also titled as the greatest man of the 20th century,he enslaved india from the clutches of the imperialistic british rule through non violence,truth and sacrifice

There is a wonderful film about this amazing man starring Ben Kingsley. You could probably rent it at your local video store. It is called simply "Ghandi".....
