I have always had a PC - usually a Dell. I like Dell, but learned recently that viruses are much less abundant for macs. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of owning a mac? I'm considering buying a new computer soon, and need to know!

MAC!

With regard to software, don't be misled into thinking that you won't be able to use any of the software you have if you buy a mac, because it simply isn't true. The pros of owning a mac far outweigh any difficulties you may experience in finding the software you want for it. Loads of major titles are released in Mac format as well as PC - people who use PCs just don't realize this because they don't ever bother to ask. And for those titles that aren't - my MacBook pro runs XP flawlessly (well, as flawlessly as XP could ever run, LOL) as a guest operating system, so the few things I can't run on MacOS (for instance, the software my GPS came with is windows only) I run on my mac through windows. As far as peripherals and accessories go - well, I'm using a Microsoft keyboard and all other PC accessories on my mac right now, and I never had to load a driver again when I switched.

If viruses are a big deal to you - sure, you could get decent antivirus software for your PC, and then spend the rest of your life being interrupted every half hour when it wants to scan something or download an update. With a mac, you don't spend any time on stuff like that - I'm doing what I want to be doing 100% of the time while my mac hums along, defragging itself in the background and laughing at virus threats while everyone else is in a panic.

As far as learning MacOS goes - you really don't have to. if you are competent on Windows, you'll figure MacOS out in a matter of minutes. It's set up a little differently, but it's so intuitive that you really don't have to worry about it. Using windows is like dealing with a child, using MacOS is like dealing with a down to earth genius.

Just think about it - schools use Macs because they are so easy - and at the same time, industries reliant on solid, high performance machines (think graphic design, editing, etc) are 99% mac. Sure, plenty of other industries use PCs... but they have huge IT departments to complement them, haha.

I was so nervous when I switched, but believe me - I didn't realize just how miserable windows is until I came to my senses and moved over to a Mac, and all of my fears proved to be unfounded. It never freezes, crashes, things never go missing and it's better in a million other ways. I'll never go back!

Macs are more "user friendly." However, you will have a harder time finding comparative software. Many of the games that run on PC don't run on a MAC. Of course, maybe you don't play many games. Mac has media players and photo editing software just like PCs, so if that's all you need then a Mac would be just fine. Me? I'm a huge gamer. I need my games, so I need my PC!

If your only concern is viruses, then I suggest 2 things. 1) Get really good antivirus software. They will prevent most virus from getting onto your computer, and can clean out the ones that actually make it through. 2) Change the way you use the Internet! If you're getting tons of viruses, then you're going to some pretty bad web sites, or your opening some bogus emails. Also, you could try Firefox, instead of Internet Explorer. That will cut way back on the viruses also.

Well the choice is up to you. If you like PC, stick with it or switch to a Mac.

The majority of the PC is used for gaming, word processing and all that. They get viruses and stuff like that, but you can always reboot.

On the other hand, a Macintosh (Mac for short) is used for fun, and has a great web browser called Safari. You can web cam and stuff just like a PC, also it does note= get any viruses. But i assume that they don't get any viruses because no one writes viruses for mac.

If you're considering getting a mac, you should wait a month or so until the new mac comes out. Mac OSX Leopard I believe.

well pc's are the usual, compatible with everything, gets viruses but can be prevented with a good protection.(not unless u look at porn.) good for gaming depending on the computer. you know u have a dell.

macs are very different.ok they dont get viruses but thats not it. they have great video editing programs. if the game is compatible and the computer is good, also good for gaming. the os x program is verry good and looks cool(so does vista i guess) in my opinion macs are fun. now you can load vista on mac with a 100$ program you can buy on the apple website, and thats all i know of. i have had a dell and no problems or viruses my whole life, and i dont think i would change, but it is up to you.

PC- I base this only on cost.

There are one hundred other reasons too

Virus's were originally written for Unix back in the 60's and people been hackin em since! MAC OS X is unix based so if you think you are outsmarting anyone, you are kidding yourself.

You currently use a PC- you now have a steep learning curve to get anything out of a MAC-They are different to be different- so you will enjoy fumbling for a couple years

Games- No one makes any really good games to run on them because there aren't any in the buying public(percentage wise) to run them on!

Spend 3 X the price, run no games, fumble for years to relearn everything, and hang out with Lesbians and Artists and brag about sticking it to Bill Gates.
Yeah real hard decision-get real

Jeffrey is absolutely right! I got my first Mac 7 years ago. I was forced to also use a Windows machine at work for 5 years of that time. But now I'm 100% Mac. They just work without problems!

Ill tell you I answer allot of questions, and the more I look into MAC the more im considering dropping pc's all together....
I found a site where a professor challenged someone to hack his macbook, no one succeeded..... You can also run windows and the mac os so people who say mac wont work with pc software are not willing to offer help, only an uneducated opinion......

It's a personal choice.
Buy the one you like best & are more comfortable with.

Yes, you do have more freedom of choice with the PC due to the fact that it is more common & therefore competitive products for it are more abundant.

Both platforms are widely used by all kinds of people for all kinds of tasks.

As for the virus issue .... take good precautions & any PC can be kept virus free...
.... don't fall victim to popular marketing campaigns ... as "inoa™" well points out (Thumbs Up !)

Macs are incompatible with 99% of computers all over the world, this means it is mostly virus-free but you cannot work with others.
