For my history class, I need to write an essay on a historical event. It has to be something that could be analyzed in depth--a major part of the essay is deciding what we would have done different had we been the political leader in charge. (For example, we could analyze September 11 and figure out what we would have changed on how it was handled, etc.) I don't want to do Sept 11, though, nor do I want to do the holocaust or the world wars (because a million other people are already doing stuff like that). It has to pertain to WORLD history, not just US history. Any suggestions?

Feb 28, 1993 -- Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents attempt to serve warrants on the Branch Davidians at a compound near Waco, TX, triggering a 51-day siege.
Eventually, armored tanks were brought into the area.
The initial raid resulted in the deaths of four agents and six Davidians. The subsequent 51-day siege by the FBI ended on April 19 when fire completely consumed the complex, killing 79 people, including 21 children and Davidian leader David Koresh, that has come to be known as the Waco Siege.

Bill Clinton was President, and the newly appointed U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno approved the recommendations of the FBI to mount an assault after being told that conditions were deteriorating and children were being abused inside

What Could Have Been Done Differently?

First of all, the NEWS MEDIA helped to escalate the situation. They filled their time with mindless
babbling to try and hold the interest of the public and just occupy some air time. "THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN BANNED FROM THE AREA
Second, .it seemed that we saw daily FBI briefings until the entire spectacle
became mentally oppressive to behold.- THEY SHOULD HAVE USED A MORE PASSIVE APPROACH
Third - When an animal is trapped in a hole, what do you do? You do not stand in
front of the hole. The animal will come out to take a look and then
quickly retreat into its burrow. The answer to getting an animal out of
its hole is to back off. THIS IS THE APPROACH THAT THE U.S. GOVERNMENT AGENCIES SHOULD HAVE TAKEN !!

Try the surrender of the Germans at the end of WWI. Treaty, etc and yada I won't get into here.

Anyway, it is felt by a lot of historians that if this had not been done so badly, there never would have been a second world war. I have heard some say that WWII was really just a continuation of WWI.
