Someone tried to explain it to me once by telling me there's a difference in _________ and ________ (maybe I don't remember). Her example was their are songs in a hymn book like The Star Spangled Banner that are not hymns, but there are also songs in a hymn book that are religious or spiritual in the lyrics that aren't hymns either. We were interrupted, and soon after this she moved away and I've lost contact with her.

To those who say a hymn is a religious song, I disagree. My friend was very adament that not all religious songs were hymns. I know of a lot of Christian Rock songs that I would never consider a hymn, yet they (in their own way) praise God.
I tend to agree with Alison R so far, but I'd like to know more.
Facts, not opinions please.

Well, the main difference is in intent. A hymn is a song or prayer 'sung to God,' about either personal religious feeling, or group religious practice/intent (Closer My God To Thee, or Onward Christian Soldiers.)
As far as song mechanics go, hymns generally stay in one key throughout, are written in the mid-range of the average singer's voice, and often have slightly different rhythm mechanics than more mainstream songs.

My wisdom is that is all in how that is sung. Hymns are many times reverent. a non secular music may be a hymn, yet in many places consisting of South Africa, people compliment and worship via making a music celebratory gospel song that almost turns a church provider right into a social gathering, yet once you ask the individuals making a music the songs, they're going to emphatically inform you that no longer something helps them experience extra religious than their gospel song.

Hymns are religiously oriented songs that recognize and give praise to God and Jesus Christ. They are intended as a means of worship, as a means of strengthening one's faith and beliefs. Song is the term for a larger group of spoken music, of which hymns are but a smaller sub group.

That's a really interesting question! I think that a hymn is sacred...not just religious or spiritual. It's spiritual on a different level.
