He might have an infection somewhere along the urinary tract.

He may have kidney stones.

It is best he go see a doctor - a urologist to be specific.

Kidney stones are the likely culprit.

I've had many stones (passed two - several more left behind). They occasionally cause some pain (okay a LOT of pain) but those occasions are rare. Usually it feels like a sore back when they are moving. And when they move my urine gains a dark orange color. That is from the blood.

Blood in the urine by itself isn't a worry, it happens a lot since the tissues in side your kidney have a lot of tiny capilliaries that are easily damaged. If he got punched in the back, slammed into a doorway, fell on his butt really hard, pulled a muscle in his back it could just be kidney trauma.

If he has had burning sensations in his urine, has taken a lot of medication, or has been drinking heavily it could be an infection or a drug interaction.

Follow your doctor's advice, and if he puts you on anti-biotics, be sure to take all of the pills (don't stop halfway through). And be sure to have a followup test about 2 weeks later.
