I have been on bed rest for almost a month. The doctor sent me to the hospital after an appointment because of blood in my urine, pressure, some contractions, and I had lost my mucas plug. I was 3-4 cm dilated when I got there, with contractions 2-3 mins apart. They gave me brethane through an IV to stop it, but no success. By 11:30 I had to get morphine shot because of the pain. At 5:00 am I was almost 5 cm dilated. By that afternoon the contractions had slowed down, and I hadn't dilated anymore... so they sent me home. How long could this go on? Do you think that I could go soon?

* 2 weeks ago they did a sonogram and estimated that he weighed 4 lbs and 7 oz. He was also practicing his breathing.

This happened to me, too! I missed Autumn the year my youngest daughter was born... because I spent that 14 weeks in bed. You could go soon... but you don't want to. Having the baby this early is really dangerous. It needs to bake another couple weeks, to make sure its lungs are fully developed.

Aim for going full-term... that means mentally WANTING to go all the way to 40 weeks... not because it's comfortable, but because that is your baby's best chance at being healthy. Keep your feet up... when they say "bed rest" they really MEAN it... DO NOT get up except to use the bathroom and take a short shower, maybe 2-3 times per week. Never get up for more than 5 minutes. Take the medications they give you religiously... never miss. Don't make exceptions to the rules you're living by right now... Don't get up to make a sandwich. Have prepared and frozen meals ready to eat... and have someone on hand to heat or prepare them for you.

Hopefully, by following the doctor's orders and being extra cautious, your baby will make it to at least 36-37 weeks. At that point the lungs are typically developed and ready to go. Earlier than that and you'd risk some pretty major health problems.

Well I am not sure why they sent you home at 5 cm. You could go quick so stay with someone who can take you to the hospital if your contractions start coming again. Once in active labor things can happen faster or slower than expected...it varies by each woman.

I would think that since your only 34 weeks that they would keep you there and continue to keep your labor from stating. Hmmm I could be wrong but it does seem a little early. But I am sure that everything will be just fine.

With my last baby I went back & forth from the hospital for 2 weeks...and they kept stopping my labor. Finally at 37 weeks they let me go all the way. My baby was big and healthy, even though he did come early everything was just fine.

Good luck to you & congrats for when you do deliver.

You can stay at 5 cm for the next 6 weeks. Being dilated is no indication of going into labor. I was 2 cm dilated from the time I was 34 weeks. It ended up that I had to be induced at almost 42 weeks because I never went into labor!

Honestly, you are 34 weeks. I would suggest self-imposed bedrest for the next three weeks, until you hit 37 weeks. Get your doctor to do an ultrasound to make sure baby is gestationally ready at that point, then start walking--that should kick-start your labor. Which, by the way, should be short and sweet, with the progress your body has already made.

However, I would make every attempt to keep that baby in until that 37 week mark. Statistically, each day you keep him/her in without your water breaking decreases the time s/he will spend in NICU by two days. Good luck!!

You can stay dilated that far for a while, actually, but it all depends on when baby is ready to come out.

So I would try to relax and yet be prepared to leave on a moment's notice. It could be in a matter of hours....or maybe days or a week.

Best of luck to you.

Don't leave your house... and if you at all can prevent it... don't go far from the hospital... you should be having a little one soon. When your at 5cm it could go rapidly... or it could go slow... but at 5 cm I'd treat it as though you could go any minute.

Good luck!

I wouldn't go far from home or better yet the hospital. Sounds like things are progressing quickly. At most I would have to say 2 days.

i don't think they should have stopped you from going into labor. Obviously your body is ready to give birth and at 5 cm dialated, you are pretty much good to go. They shouldn't stop something like that. How big is your baby?
