Hi there, i recently asked a question regarding pethodine of which i'm still looking for the correct answer. The hospital where i am going to give birth is a natural hospital and only offer pethodine, gas & air, massage, oils (water births of which i'm keen on) etc. With my first i had an epidural & felt fantastic,as this isn't available what is the next best thing to an epidural & are there any ppl out there with good or bad experiences they can share. Thanks!

I've had two waterbirths. It really is a very amazing and effective way to manage labor pain. When you get into the warm water, all the sensations change. The weightlessness really helps. It's very relaxing. Some people refer to waterbirth as an "aqua-dural" because it really can be that effective.

Try to find a copy of the book "Choosing Waterbirth" by Bertram.

I've had three babies and all in different ways. The first was a c-section with epidural. Never want to do that again!

The second was a vaginal birth with epidural. Didn't hurt and it was nice to push my baby out but I hate the epidural and after effects, and it's strange to not feel anything. I like feeling what's going on and working with my body's cues.

Third baby was totally natural. I had a headache during labor so I took some Tylenol. Took care of my headache but wore off when the active labor pains started. Found a lot of relief in the hot tub, but did not do a water birth.

Transition and pushing were the worst pain I've ever felt in my life but still I'll do natural for my next pregnancies because it's so satisfying afterwards and the recovery is SUPER QUICK.

I left the birthing center 3 hours after delivery and went home! Neither baby or me were groggy but alert and relaxed.

So the only "pain relief" I had for labor and delivery were the hot tub and counter pressure to my back.

Hope this helps. Good luck - hope you can try the water birth!

I've had 5 - 1st with epidural which I was very relieved to have as very painful & not going anywhere for hours. 2nd time round though I had my baby in a midwife run clinic so not much available. i was encouraged to walk around alot to get things going & actually only ended up in hospital 45 mins before baby popped out so no pain relief at all. The other 3 I used gas and air which was brilliant - once you get over the first few puffs which can make you fell a bit sick. Once you get into it though it's great. For my last one, I wouldn't let go of the face mask so they just turned it from gas and air to oxygen so that I'd be with it & I still had the comfort of holding the mask (sounds a bit odd I know but it was a comfort).

My experience therefore was 1st time round - much the hardwst delivery but after that your body gets better at it so less need for pain relief. Also practice your breathing. If you can control your breathing for a long time during the first hours of contractions you can get much further along before thinking about pain relief.

Good Luck

I used a bath for a little bit, but it is nothing compared to an epidural. Keep in mind that evey labor is different, also so is everyone's pain tollerance. Just make sure that your hospital is willing to be flexible. . . let them know that you want to try a natural birth. . .but have epidual or other treatments available if you need them.
Always have a " PLAN B"
The best thing is being able to be up out of the bed, if you are doing something, even if it is moving around the room it REALLY does seem to help. Being strapped to monitors, IV and other contraptions make you tied to the bed and ALL of your focus is on the baby leaving your body.

i have had 3 natural birth and they hurt like hell, but the pain is gone very fast after the baby is born. if my hospital had water birth i would do that for sure. all they had was a shower so my husband could not even be there to help me.
