The best time to conceive is immediately preceding ovulation, and the day on which occulation occurs. A well-respected 1996 study concluded that, statistically, the best chance of conception occurred from sex that took place in the several days leading up to ovulation, including ovulation day, with the single best statistical chance occuring from sex one day before ovulation.

In a fertile environment, healthy sperm can survive for 5 days. (A few articles have stated sperm can survive for as long as 7 days but I know of no gyn or reproductive endocrionologist who accepts that, personally.) The life expectancy of an egg, by constrast, is just several hours -- typically it is thought that an egg, once released from a follicle, will survive for anywhere from 8 to 24 hours. It also takes sperm a bit of time to get to where it's going.

The above is true regardless of whether your cycles are regular or irregular. The difference with irregular cycles is simply that ovulation is harder to predict.

The "textbook" scenario is of a 28 day cycle, with ovulation occurring on day 14. However, that scenario does not accurately describe many, and perhaps even most, women.

To predict when you're likely to ovulate, there are a few things you can do. You can use an ovulation predictor test (they are strips that are basically like home pregnancy tests) or ovulation monitor -- many women like them, many do not. The cons of using them: they are not cheap, they can be annoying and sometimes difficult to interpret, and they don't work for every woman. Also, just because you get a reading that indicates ovulation is likely to occur, it doesn't conform ovulation -- in other words, you can get positive results and not ovulate, but you aren't aware of it. And if you have irregular cycles, the cost really does add up.

Another method, and the one I personally prefer, is the Fertility Awareness Method -- charting your cycles. It involves taking your temperature, checking cervical fluids, and checking your cervical position, all of which provide clues about when you will, and when (and whether) you have ovulated. (You may hear this referred to as Natural Family Planning -- essentially they are the same, with the difference being one of underlying philosophy: NFP advocates abstinence during fertile periods for those trying to avoid pregnancy, while FAM accepts the use of contraception, sex outside marriage, etc. But the tactics for tracking fertility are the same: temperature, cervical fluids, cervical position.)

If you're interested in charting your cycles I highly recommend the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility, by Toni Weschler. I would also visit the forums at http://www.tcoyf.com.

All that said, for a person just starting to try and conceive the "easiest" approach is to just have sex every other day, starting about one week into your cycle.

Hope that helps.

Is there ever a best time? Some people like to wait until they have a home for the baby. Some like to be financially secure. It is no picnic having a baby and no money for all the things you need. Saying that I had my first one at 18 and no money, 2nd at 20, still no money. We managed. Love is the important thing and having time to spend with your child. Why have a child if you have to work all the hours you can to be able to keep up a life style. I worked too but fitted it in round my children and their schooling. They never did without anything and prosperity came later. Children are only children for such a short time, it is a shame to miss it and all the wonders of first smile, first steps, first words as well as the toddler years, which is the basis of their learning. They learn more in the first 4-5 years of their lives than in any other and this helps make them the person they will be in later life.

You are actually only fertile around three days in a month, sperm has a long way to go and many barriers to pass even getting as far as the egg for example a womans bacteria in her vagina kill sperm thats why mens sperm count needs to be plenty to increase the chnaces of just one of those millions of sperm to penetrate the egg, when you put in into prespective like that it should give you an idea that conception is a miraculous thing.
My best advice is to scrap the whole thermomitor thing and legs up in the air after sex thing and enjoy making love to your partner every two days. Having sex every day means your partners sperm count is not as high as it possibly could be.
Eventually you will get there and it is worth the wait... trust me

If you have a pretty regular cycle then your most likely time to conceive is right before, during or right after ovulation. This is usually days 12-16 of your cycle.

At the most fertile days you will see mucus of an egg-white, stretchy clear consistency or a lot of runny opaque mucus.

This cervical mucus helps assist sperm to the egg.
