You probably mean nomenclature which is simply a method of naming things. It is most commonly known in the context of binomial nomenclature or the scientific method of naming things with two names, genus and species. Thus, we are called homo sapiens or genus homo and species sapiens. Redwood trees are sequoia sempervirens. Sequoia trees are sequoia gigantea. You get the idea.

Nomenclature refers to the name, or noun for an item, for example, the army is using the M16 series rifle. The military refers to it as: rifle, caliber 5.56mm, M16A2. In that description, rifle is the nomenclature, 5.56mm describes one of it's characteristics (caliber), and M16A2 designates the exact model.

Nomenclature is the broad, descriptive noun that defines the item.
