I saw some tulips at the grocery store yesterday and since they are my favorite flower, I bought them. Unfortunately, dumb me, I didn't do research first. If I leave them indoors, will they be ok? Besides, I don't have a whole lot of sunlight outdoors anyway. Its mostly shade. Plus I have a cat and after buying them I found out that they are poisonous, so I have to keep them up so she can't get to them. I love tulips and I don't want to kill them (or my cat). What should I do?

I'm not aware of them being poisonous and none of my cats has ever been bothered by them (they've occasionally chewed the leaves) -- in fact, the squirrels in my yard dig up and eat my tulip bulbs all the time (seems to be their favorite treat.) Just enjoy your tulips indoors til they stop blooming. You can plant the bulbs outdoors but they may not survive -- often the "forcing" that the nurseries have to do to make them bloom in the pots exhausts the bulbs and they don't recover well. I've had 50/50 luck with replanting outdoors. They prefer sunlight but can do OK in partial shade as well. It helps to plant them with a little bone meal in the soil (you can get this at any garden center.)

The problem with tulips is they are very short lived. You get one flower for a few weeks and that's it till next year. If you bought them in bloom you really don't have to worry they will fade before you have a chance to kill them.
