I have a wool coat that has that "wool odor". I had it dry cleaned and I used Frebreze. The odor still comes back. HELP! Please!

If you want to remove the odor without damage to the oils or fiber use activated charcoal. Put the coat in a box that either has a lid or can be closed up. Put the activated charcoal in an open plastic container in with the coat. Leave the two together and check it in a couple of days. If you still smell the wool, leave it for a couple of more days. It will remove the smell.

That "wool odor" comes from the natural lanolin oils in the wool so your coat was made of wool that had not been completely "scoured" or processed to remove the oils. The good news is that this sort of wool is more water repellent than scoured wool. The bad news, of course, is that it has a scent and it will also be more likely to attract moths which will eat holes in it. Your best bet, when you are not wearing the coat, is to hang it in one of those zippered coat bags that slips over a hanger and put a cedar block in with it. This will give it a nice woodsy scent to help cover the wool odor and will repel moths. You can also put scented dryer sheets in the hanger bag with the coat -- just make sure they don't contact the coat because they may leave a mark.

You will find that every time you have it cleaned the odor will get less and less because cleaning solvent will dissolve the oils over time. You might ask the dry cleaner if they can use a stronger solvent next time you have it cleaned.

Sorry, but just like a wet dog always smells like a wet dog, wool will always smell like wool, and the better the wool, the more persistent the odor. You might try minimizing the effect by hanging the garment outside, ideally on a sunny and breezy day. You can partially disguise the odor by carrying an air freshener of a neutral odor, but I'm going to be the first to tell you, that wool smell is with you to stay, so learn to enjoy it.
