Open4one has the best answer there is. I read about the beginning of the civil war online last week and even the north at that time stated it was not about slavery it was to unite the states and keeping all together.
Our use of the rebel flag is a Southern thing, the racial issue is brought up by those that want to keep it a racial issue for their own purposes. We have advanced here in the South, and think a lot in the North should look to the slum area or project areas they have in their large cities before throwing stones.
Ole Miss has the rebel flag.....its a school flag....means from the South......MANY nationalities go there and are proud of it. I just don't see white/black when I wave a flag IF I even had one lol....but hey what the heck we're rednecks huh? we're supposed to wave flags and be patriotic

The rebel flag is a bizarre example of liberal hypocrisy.

In and of itself, the confederate battle flag no longer has any inherent meaning. Some fly it as a symbol of their being from the South, some to signify that they like Southern rock and roll, some to say that they don't like the encroachments of the federal government on individual liberty, and some to say that they support state sovereignty. I've never met one that considered it a symbol of racial superiority, but that's what the detractors hate it for.

What that reveals is a profound ignorance of history. At the time of the Secession, slavery was legal, and the slave trade involved the North. Moreover, a recent USSC decision held that if a slave were taken by their master to a non-slave state, that slave was still a slave. There were no looming threats to the institution at the time of Secession, therefore it is ridiculous to think that slavery was a major factor in the decision to secede.

The North then invaded the South. No one has ever suggested that this would have occurred but for the Secession. The North simply wasn't about to mass an army to go free the slaves. Noble though that may have been, it would not have happened. In fact, it would be difficult to make the case that the abolition of slavery would have happened before the Twentieth Century were it not for the Secession. The North wasn't in a big hurry to make that happen.

The rebel flag only has offensive racial connotations in the minds of the opponents of free speech that want it banned.

He should have the right to do it. But it would be nice for him to know what it represents. It represents a militia that wanted to break up the United States and succeed from the Union. So the flag sort of represents not waiting to be part of the United States (ie unAmerican). It also represents racism, slavery, and segregation to a lot of people rather that has merit or not.

His family is obviously a family of bigots just like he has been raised to be. Not because of music or tv preferences but because they fought to keep slavery going. The Rebel flag was the south saying hey we will be our own nation where we make blacks be our slaves if you like it or not. IT IS WRONG AND RACIST AND IT HURTS EVERYONE BY HAVING IT UP ON THE TRUCK. Congrats for being a bigot, homie

Because, it may insult a large group of people who take that symbol/flag to represent a time in their history when extreme violence and persecution was lambasted on them daily.

Not that I believe the Rebel flag represents that, but its like driving around with a big Swastika on your car and saying its not the Nazi one, its the Dharmic religious symbol.

Nothing.

It's a free country and as long as the kid is a licensed driver and adheres to the rules of the road, then he is free to express himself by displaying a flag on his pickup!

If there is a problem, I think the African, Mexican, etc. flags should not be flown either. EVERYTHING is offensive to somebody.

P.S. I'm gonna be shouting FREEBIRD!!! on May 25th, because Skynyrd is coming to town and I just bought my tickets this morning!!! Are they coming to your town?

many people see it as a link to slavery, and glorifying a government that condoned slavery. personally i dont think there is anything wrong with it though, except it probably makes him look like a douche bag

It hurts people because they misinterpret history and are too ignorant or closed-minded to learn.

Give the protesters the power and you won't be able to drive with an American flag on your truck.... Unless it's burning.
