Your better choice is to call your utility company and explain to them you would not be able to pay the bill and the reason. Provide them a proof of your lay-off notice. This will buy you some time. Don't expect others to pay for you unless you have children and spouse at home.

Call the utility company and explain your sitiuation. Most of them will let you get on a payment plan if you're in that sort of situation. Sometimes they may require 50% of the bill to be paid at the time of payment arrangement, so be prepared for that.

If you are eligible for unemployment, contact the utility and explain the situation. They may not impose a penalty for not paying the bill until the first unemployment check arrives.
