300 is not based on the actual historical event but rather on a graphic novel(comic book) from the 1970's that was very loosely based on the actual historical event. The movie follows the novel closely which was the intent of the movie. It was not intended to closely depict the actual events or the uniforms or anything else. There's alot of characters added and some deleted from the historical account. What is factual is that Leonidas and 300 of his men met up with an additional army of roughly 8,000 men and they held out for three days against overwhelming odds. The Persian army was believed to be the largest ever assembled, somewhere between 300,000 and a million men. Whats great about the movie? Visually stunning. Good cast. Ton's of blood and tons of entertainment. If you want to watch something on the actual historical account watch the show the history channel did on the battle of Thermopylae . If you want to be entertained for a couple hours watch the movie 300

Once the Spartans, being greatly outnumbered, did stand up to the Persians but remember that it's a historical fact that's been distorted in the telling and retelling until, now, it's a legend and can't be considered to be historical fact.

Secondly, the story was made into a graphic novel (comic book for adults) and so it was further distorted (such as adding mutant Persian warriors with swords as arms or whatever).

Thirdly, the graphic novel was then made into the movie and they wanted an artistic rendering not a literal and historically accurate rending of the battle and times.

Lastly, keep in mind the movie is told from the narrator's viewpoint. The guy who lost his eye and was sent back to Sparta with the King's necklace is telling the tale and, naturally, his own perceptions and emotions are coloring what he tells and, consequently, what we see because it's meant to be as if he's telling us and the rest of the Spartans the story

So, is it "true?" It's based on fact but it's fictionalized fact.

It's about 300 spartans defending Sparta against 10,000 of the Persian hordes. The basics are true, but the movie takes a lot of liberties with the story. About all we know of this, is the numbers.

it is abt the 300 spartans who fought against an army of 1 million men led by King Xerxes. it is based from the novel of Frank Miller and it is a semi-historical account of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. It is directed by Zack Snyder and the cast is led by Gerard Butler who played Kin Leonidas.

it's about the battle between 300 men from sparta against persian.. it's a good epic movie about defending your pride and your freedom.. it could be the truth, considering that the spartans were famous for their fighting skills, compared to the athena citizen.. besides, the tactic used in that war is a good one, according to the rules of war.. whether it's true or not, it's a really good movie..

Blood and gore. Lots of killing, and a ridiculous story with very little basis in real history. When I went to this R-rated movie, the theater was loaded with pre-pubescent kids... no wonder why our society is so violent.

The only redeeming quality, at least from my standpoint, were the very buff guys in skimpy leather short-shorts... not exactly a very appropriate uniform for sword fights and hand-to-hand combat on a rocky beach, though.

Rent Braveheart instead. It's essentially the same story line, but with a better plot and more believable dialogue.

It is supposedly the last stand of the Spartans against the Persian Army. I did not see the film so I do not know if it is fact, fiction or a mix as most movies are.
