John Kennedy was President of the US. The "Cold War" was in full swing. The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in October of that year, putting the world on the brink of nuclear war. Communism was a huge concern---many feared that Communists would take over the world. On February 20, 1962, JOhn Glenn piloted the Mercury-Atlas 6 "Friendship 7" spacecraft on the first manned orbital mission of the United States. He orbited the earth 3 times on that flight.

Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring was published in 1962. It is generally regarded as the book that started the environmentalist movement in the US

The first black student registered at the University of Mississippi. He had to be protected by federal marshals.

The Viet Nam war was in its early stages
