Birds can not expel gas, this is why things like alka seltzer can be fatal. The bird itself does not explode, but its stomach can rupture causeing death.

I have no idea, BUT snails really melt when you pour salt on them (I tried it once. It's very grusome.) so perhaps it could be true. My understanding of this phenomenon (if it's true) is that they can't burp to expell excess gas. I watched the guys on "Mythbusters" blow up a two liter plastic bottle of Coca-Cola by inserting a couple of Mentos and tightening the cap. The ultimate explosion was incredible. So, if seagulls really can't burp or otherwise expell excess stomach gas, I bet that this urban legend might actually be true.

the poster above me I'm sure is correct from experience but no theyed just burp an poop for a while, same myth went with rice and birds at weddings...not true
